Tequila has become very popular as the years have gone by.
What makes a tequila more expensive than others? Well, tequilas are available for a few bucks, while others may range to a hefty amount in millions too!
There are a few factors that distinguish the cost of a specific tequila from others.
First and foremost is the quality of raw materials used in the making process. Next is the aging period and the distillation process. The most expensive tequilas are extra-Añejo as the flavor gets more prosperous and stronger over three years of aging. Lastly, exorbitant bottling is the critical factor that sometimes exceeds the cost of tequila itself.
This article discusses tequila which cost as much as millions and as less as a hundred dollars.
Top 6 Tequila’s in the World
1. Tequila Ley. 925 Diamante – 3.5 Million USD
Tequila Ley has a commercial worth of 3.5 Million USD and is remarkably the most expensive tequila in the world one could ever purchase.
This premium extra añejo is prepared using the best quality of raw materials including agave and alcohol and is stored in barrels for seven long years.
José Dávalos Mejía is the meticulous designer of the bottle and led the team of 17 Mexicans who spent ten months designing the exquisite bottle.
You might be wondering why the bottle cost $3.5 million.
“A jewel that envelops another jewel: tequila” are the remarks of the company’s owner.
The reason behind the exorbitant bottle is the way it is encrusted with five pounds of platinum. The ‘Diamond Sterling Bottle’ is crafted with 4,100 pure white diamonds too. That’s opulent!
2. Tequila Ley. 925 Ultra-Premium – 2.25 Million USD
Tequila Ley designed the then-most expensive tequila to ever exist in 2006.
This ultra-premium tequila was prepared using a 100% blue agave plant and after processing was put in the barrel for seven years of aging before being sold in Mexico.
However, the company made only thirty-three pieces of these sumptuous tequila bottles. You might not have to pay a whopping $2.25 million if these bottles were not embellished with pure white gold and pure platinum with yellow gold.
3. Clase Azul 15th Anniversary Edition – 30,000 USD
Arturo Lomeli, the CEO of Clase Azul celebrated the company’s 15th anniversary during which he revealed the uniquely hand-crafted 15 splurge-worthy bottles of tequila.
Each bottle was auctioned at $30,000 and a generous donation was made at Fundación con Causa Azul A.C. from the total earnings of 4.5 million USD.
The reason behind the hefty price tag attached to each bottle is the care, hard work, and excellence that went behind making it one of its kind. The director hired a set of fifteen Mexican artisans and each of them was supposed to craft the Mexican traditional products (amber, Talavera, tequila, and Olinala) on each tequila bottle.
Besides the artistic approach behind the bottle, the tequila itself is prepared with such royalty as it was processed using two ultra-aged tequilas. One of the tequila was barrel-aged for fifteen years in Spain, while the second one was barrel-aged for 6 years in Portugal before aging for 5 more years in a white oak barrel in the U.S.
4. Patrón and Guillermo Del Toro Añejo Tequila – 1,500 USD
This tequila reached its excellence following the joint effort of Guillermo del Toro, a film producer, and Patrón.
The bottle is uniquely designed with a skull on top. This extra añejo tequila is a blend of other tequilas of five years of barrel age. It has a vanilla and nutty flavor with an oak and agave touch.
5. Fuenteseca 1993 Extra Añejo Tequila – 1,000 USD
This extra-Anejo, Fuenteseca’s Reserva is the oldest aged tequila available.
In 1984, the company planted agaves for the preparation of tequila, harvested them in 1993, and following the distillation process, stored them in barrels in 1994.
Then for the next 10 years, these barrels were placed in a lowland area before being shifted to a mountainous area for the next 11 years. They were finally bottled in 2014.
6. Herradura 150 Aniversario Extra Añejo Tequila – 500 USD
Herradura celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2020 and released its 100 months old barrel-aged tequila to represent its years of excellence served in making it.
